The Seamen's Institute of Newport
Located in the heart of the harbor district at 18 Market Square, the Seamen’s Church Institute has been a haven for seafarers and a vital resource on the waterfront since 1919.

Open to the public 365 days a year, the Institute welcomes mariners and visitors from the world over to this historic gem.

The Seamen’s Church Institute (SCI) has historically provided services and support to those working on the waterfront, as well as visiting and local boaters. Our doors are also open to the public, whether residents or tourists, and to individuals and families fromNewport County in need of compassionate assistance.

The Aloha Café at SCI is a great place to enjoy breakfast and lunch, and is a popular favorite among locals and visitors alike.

Join the friendly atmosphere at either the Aloha Café counter or table seating in the Mariner’s Lounge.

Whether a brief or extended visit, SCI staff warmly welcomes all our visitors.

For those on extended visits, SCI collects mail and packages, offers fax and phone message service, provides on/off Island transportation for errands, and if needed, provides problem-solving assistance or referrals to community agencies. Visiting and local boaters also take advantage of Seamen’s laundry and shower facilities.

A true treasure in SCI’s building is the Chapel of the Sea, designed by renowned artist Durr Freedley. An artistic gem, the Chapel offers visitors a quiet, sacred space and over the years has been the setting for many weddings and memorial services.

The Seamen’s Church Institute’s historic waterfront building is the perfect venue to host meetings and events. Whether a gathering for 10 or 100, SCI can accommodate your event.

One hour to full day meetings, receptions, parties and weddings…all are welcome.

In 1919 the Seamen’s Church Institute founders wanted to provide support and services to mariners. Seamen’s is truly an organization of “people helping people”.

This was true in 1919, and is true today. With the continued support of the community and visiting mariners, it will continue to be true into the future. We look forward to your visit!
