| Regatta Venues
The Golden Year of Racing encompasses a series of regattas from
July to October 2009 at five different racing venues.
Newport Trophy Regatta 41°N, 71°W July 25 - 26, Newport,
Rhode Island
The first stop of the summer-long celebration brings sailors to
the Ida Lewis Yacht Club the last weekend of July. As recent tradition
has it, every two years, the 12 Metre Fleet asks the Ida Lewis Yacht
Club to host a regatta for the 12s. Now in its third running, this
year will serve as the inaugural contest of the Newport Trophy Regatta.
Named after the trophy once given to the winners of a race hosted
at Ida Lewis during an America’s Cup year for those yachts
eliminated from the Cup finals; up to fifteen 12 Metres are expected
to compete in the waters surrounding Newport.
Edgartown 12 Metre Regatta 41°N, 70°W August 8 - 9, Edgartown,
Massachusetts
Now in its fifteenth running, the Edgartown 12 Metre Regatta will
serve as the second stop on the Golden Year Tour.
Sailed in the waters off of Martha’s Vineyard, this annual
event is a favorite of the 12 Metre Class. The boats tied up alongside
the docks of the Edgartown Yacht Club, where all the events are held
and this exquisite, quintessential New England destination only add
to the excitement and allure of these two days of racing.
The Nantucket 12 Metre Regatta 41°N, 70°W August 13 - 14,
Nantucket,Massachusetts
Run annually in mid-August since 2003 by the Nantucket Yacht Club,
the Nantucket 12 Metre Regatta is a proud part of the famed Nantucket
Race Week. Organized by Nantucket Community Sailing, scores of boats
from a variety of classes compete here annually for a shot at taking
home top honors.Althoughmany of the 12s will race in the week’s
12 Metre event, the wooden 12s generally stay on to race in the prestigious
Opera House Cup.

The 12 MetreWorld Championships 41°N, 71°W
September 22 - 27, Newport, Rhode Island
The fourth stop on the Golden Year Tour brings
the fleet back to the waters off Newport for the 12 Metre World
Championships. Now held biannually by decree at different venues
around the world, this year’s competition will be held the
last weekend in September. Serving as the centerpiece of the tour,
the 2009 event will be the 10th running of the 12 Metre Worlds.
Hosted by the New York Yacht Club, all 25
yachts likely to participate in this year’s event will be docked along Bannister’s
Wharf – just as they were some 20 years ago when this sailing
city was synonymous with the America’s Cup.
There will be no lack of social events during
this year’s
celebration at the New York Yacht Club’s Habour Court as well
as at several other venues around Newport.
New York Classic Race
Week 41°N, 72°W
October 2 - 3, New York, New York
The racing finale of the Golden Year Tour
takes the fleet to downtown New York City during the first weekend
of October. The ten or so 12s likely to participate in the twoday
regatta will be moored inside Dennis Conner’s North Cove Marina, located just outside of
the heart of the city’s financial district. This special gathering
will mark the first time a 12 Metre Class event is held in New York
Harbor. Like the fleet’s Nantucket appearance, the New York
race ispart of a larger annual event, New York Classic Week, with
a closing ceremony and gala that is sure to provide a fitting conclusion
to the 2009 Golden Year.
