Cmte. Gianfranco Alberini
In recognition of his leadership in 12 Metre yacht racing, the co-chairmen
of the Golden Year of Racing and the 12 Metre World Championships
wish to dedicate the 12 Metre Commemorative Program in conjunction
with this year’s Newport Harbor
Guide to Cmte.Gianfranco Alberini
of Italy.
With Alberini’s foresight, the International Twelve Metre
Association was founded nearly three decades ago in Paris, in 1982.
As the president of the first Italian challenge to the America’s
Cup, Alberini joined together with other Cup challengers, to create
the organization.
He was elected president of the worldwide group of prestigious racing
boats and remained in charge during those formative years until 1988,
when he passed the role of president to Dyer Jones of the United
States.

During the tumultuous 1983 America’s Cup here in Newport,
Alberini sailed aboard Italy’s Azzurra and for the America’s
Cup in Perth, where he was appointed Challenger of Record.
The son of an Admiral and an officer in the
Italian Navy, himself, Alberini has sailed the world’s seas
most of his life. His regatta titles in the Mediterranean and beyond
are numerous. Also, to his credit, is the rise of the prestigious
Yacht Club Costa Smeralda. As the YCCS commodore for 20 years and
the IMA General Secretary, Alberini has maintained his involvement
in the world of racing and his passion for large sailing yachts.
