Alana under the Mt. Hope Bridge

Newport Harbor anxiously awaits the arrival of the 6 Metre Class Sailboats arriving this summer in anticipation of the 2009 Six Metre World Cup from September 5-12.

Sail Newport will manage this influx of 25-40 boats and their five man crews arriving from all over the world. The 6 Metre boats (6mR) will race out of the basin at the Alofsin Piers at Fort Adams.

Regatta Headquarters will be located on the grounds of the Museum of Yachting – a most appropriate location, as many antique and classic 6mR boats will take part in this event as well as more modern boats.

Newporters will be especially interested in how Madcap and Cherokee perform. Madcap, designed by F. Hoyt in 1924 for The British America Cup, was restored to her original lines in 2008 by seven International Yacht Restoration School (IYRS) second year students. Cherokee, an early Olin Stephens design (1930) was publically restored this past year at the Museum of Yachting by skilled shipwrights as part of a “living exhibit.”

The 6mR Class is a development class that preceded the 12 Metre Class and together they represent the innovative spirit that is present in today’s state-of-the-art racing sail boats. Chosen as an Olympic Class boat in 1908 the 6mR Class became the most competitive International Class in the 1920s and 1930s.

The fleet that will gather here in September will present a portrait of racing yacht design that will stir the heart of every sailor. Be part of the excitement and come watch top world sailors race in the class that is as competitive today as it has been from the beginning.
