Founded
by The Royal Western Yacht Club and first thought of by Blondie
Hasler and Sir Francis Chichester of England, this famous race
is returning to its roots and will be open to Corinthian sailors
in yachts from 30ft to 50 ft. The race will appeal to amateur yachtsmen
rising to the challenge, and also to aspiring professionals seeking
to take a step up the ladder to the Grand Prix Races such as The
Transat and Vendee Globe.
The 2005 race will be known as The Faraday
Mill OSTAR and is being supported by a range of British companies
as well as a substantial group of companies and organizations based
here inn Newport. These include The Rhode Island State Yachting
Committee, The Newport Convention and Visitors Bureau, The
Newport Yacht Club, The Newport Harbor Hotel and Marina, Naiad Inflatables
of Newport Inc, The Seaman’s Church
Institute of Newport and several other companies currently talking
to the race organizers.

The starting gun will be fired in Plymouth England
on May 29th, and it is expected that the first yachts will arrive
in Newport about June 15th. The race has attracted entries from many
countries including the U.K., France, USA, Netherlands and Belgium
and it is anticipated that there will be some 30 to 35 competitors
at the start competing in both mono hulls and multi hulls.
This is the 12th edition of this famous race and
the organizers and the competitors are looking forward to the warm
welcome traditionally provided by the people of Newport.
