Founded by The Royal Western Yacht Club and first thought of by Blondie Hasler and Sir Francis Chichester of England, this famous race is returning to its roots and will be open to Corinthian sailors in yachts from 30ft to 50 ft. The race will appeal to amateur yachtsmen rising to the challenge, and also to aspiring professionals seeking to take a step up the ladder to the Grand Prix Races such as The Transat and Vendee Globe.

The 2005 race will be known as The Faraday Mill OSTAR and is being supported by a range of British companies as well as a substantial group of companies and organizations based here inn Newport. These include The Rhode Island State Yachting Committee, The Newport Convention and Visitors Bureau, The Newport Yacht Club, The Newport Harbor Hotel and Marina, Naiad Inflatables of Newport Inc, The Seaman’s Church Institute of Newport and several other companies currently talking to the race organizers.

The starting gun will be fired in Plymouth England on May 29th, and it is expected that the first yachts will arrive in Newport about June 15th. The race has attracted entries from many countries including the U.K., France, USA, Netherlands and Belgium and it is anticipated that there will be some 30 to 35 competitors at the start competing in both mono hulls and multi hulls.

This is the 12th edition of this famous race and the organizers and the competitors are looking forward to the warm welcome traditionally provided by the people of Newport.
