Rhode Island’s spectacular coastline, prized water bodies and vibrant cities and towns make our state an attractive place to live and visit. Yet these precious natural resources and communities are under attack from irresponsible polluters and intensive development pressure. The Conservation Law Foundation (CLF) Rhode Island is leading efforts to protect marine resources, reduce global warming pollution, create fishable and swimmable waters, and hold decision-makers accountable for upholding environmental laws. |

“CLF brings muscle to environmental protection in Rhode Island. We work toward collaborative solutions to environmental problems and also take legal action when the voice of environmental protection must be heard,” CLF-Rhode Island Director Cynthia Giles says. Conservation Law Foundation is New England’s leading environmental advocacy organization. Since 1966, CLF has worked to protect New England’s people, natural resources and communities. CLF's long history of successful advocacy in Rhode Island helps us remain a powerful advocate for Rhode Island’s environment and communities. 1980s: Initiated clean up of Narragansett Bay, Mt. Hope Bay and Buzzard's Bay by requiring cities and towns to comply with the Clean Water Act. 1986: Blocked a proposed development on Black Point in Narragansett. 1989: Defeated a proposal to build the Big River Reservoir that would have flooded wetlands and ruined wildlife habitat. 1991: Helped ensure passage of tough childhood lead poisoning laws. 1992: Protected Narragansett Bay by filing suit to stop sewage pollution in Fall River. 1993: Prevented the construction of a highly polluting coal-fired power plant in East Providence. |
1996–2000: Defeated deeply flawed proposal to build massive cargo port at Quonset Point. 1999–2006: Won a tough water pollution permit for Brayton Point power plant that protects Mt. Hope Bay from pollution and destruction of marine life. 2005: Helped ensure adoption of tough new rules to prevent global warming pollution from cars sold in Rhode Island. 2005: Successfully pushed Coastal Resources Management Council to reverse its approval of construction in Narragansett wetlands. 2005: Induced the Department of Environmental Management to issue new controls on polluted stormwater runoff from commercial and industrial properties.
